Simplify: Detox Your Business in the New Year

The Academy is officially back for the new semester!

On my New Years post I mentioned how this year I want you to leap. It was my motivating word for last year. A word that kept me focused and moving forward with intention.

This year, my word is simplify.

I didn’t choose simplify, it chose me.

Last year was hectic. My work life balance was not good at all. I’m not sure you can ever get the balance completely right but going to bed at 5am when you have kids waking up at 8am is not healthy or sustainable! My house, studio (okay tiny cupboard office thingy), health, business systems, business ideas, inbox all need resetting. I need to cleanse, declutter, get rid of the unnecessary and keep only the essentials. Then start rebuilding from the ground up so I can be a healthier, happier, more creative me that my family (and I) deserve.

I’m sure I’m not the only one.

So I propose a challenge!

SIMPLIFY: Detox Your Business Challenge

  • Do you feel like business clutter is taking over your life?
  • Do you take on too much and never really have time to just sit and do nothing?
  • Do you need to refresh and renew your marketing and PR for the coming year?

Then this challenge is for you! It’s time to start afresh. To reclaim your life by clearing out clutter and getting organised. Running a business should not impact negatively on our lives. With a few changes we can look forward to a year full of prosperity and excitement, with clear minds and focus.

The SIMPLIFY challenge will run here on the blog. Every day for the rest of January we’ll be bringing you posts with advice you can put into action so you can simplify and organise your business. The first phase is DECLUTTER. The second is REBUILD.

So you don’t miss any posts you might want to sign up to get them in your inbox. It’s also great way to keep them all together so you can refer to them in your own time. Some tips/activities will need more time than others but the aim is to make small changes that make big differences.

So what do you say? Are you in?

This post makes real sense to me, thanks!
I love designing fabrics for my purses but I find that I made too many different styles to reasonably cope with. It’s hard to keep track of stock, photography and everything else at the moment.
This year I’m going to pare down my range so that each piece gets the attention it deserves – without me completely stressing out!

    • Isa Maria says:

Hi Anna, so glad to see you here! Narrowing down your range is a great idea if you are struggling to control it all. You can always add in more designs later on in the year if you need to.

  2. Patti says:

You know I’m in!! (and I signed up to get your posts in my inbox as well).
2012 is going to be awesome!

    • Isa Maria says:

2012 IS going to be awesome! I’m so excited to have you join us Patti. *jumping up and down* excited!

I’m in! I have to be – I have no choice but to simplify as family and home life have become more and more hectic. I’m having to simplify – ditch timewasting exercises and focusing on the essentials. I can’t wait to read all your advice this month – I so need it!
I did sign up to receive your blog posts to my inbox, but don’t seem to be getting them through. Going to sign up again!

    • Isa Maria says:

Hi Viv, please let me know if they still don’t show up. Some people seem to be getting them and others don’t, I’m not sure why! If the months goes well I might put it all into a free ebook or something too so it’s all in one place :)

  4. I am SO in! I feel like every couple weeks I come out of a trance and realize I haven’t seen my friends, my dogs are looking at me like, “Remember us?” and my yoga mat is stuffed under my desk. I feel like there is never enough time and I find myself continually wondering what I just spent the last week doing. I don’t know how I am going to do it, but finding the balance this year is my goal as well! After all, I can’t run a healthy business if I’m not healthy! Thanks for the reminder and can’t wait to see what’s to come from The Academy!

  5. P.S. – a friend recommended I pick one thing each month that I want to focus a bit of each day on so at the end of the year I have a “calendar” of sorts of what I have accomplished. This month, I am working on practicing yoga at least 15 minutes a day. Next month, it will be 30 minutes of French a day (a goal I have had for years… what HAVE I been doing?). I love this idea of counting time through small accomplishments!

    • Isa Maria says:

Hi Brianne! I’m so excited by your energy! That tip from your friend is a GREAT one. I might try that too. Small achievements and the little things are what makes up our lives so they are just as important as the big stuff. Thank you for commenting!

  6. Jameka says:

I am so ready! I have already started to reorganize my work space so I am excited for any advice!

    • Isa Maria says:

That’s great that you have started reorganising already Jameka. It makes me feels so much better when I’m organised.

  7. I’m in!! I”m getting ready to expand and move into a larger production space, so I have a great opportunity to start fresh. I can’t wait to get your advice so I can do it right – and not wimp out! :)

  8. Zoe Rooney says:

Love it! I am a bit of an organization/ planning freak and am always looking for new ways to improve my processes. Can’t wait to see what you come up with!

  9. Anna says:

Do you take on too much and never really have time to just sit and do nothing?

    - Very much so! I’m in :)
